experimental bookmaking
camp week 1
with Christie
Ages: Rising 3-6th Graders
Class Time: 9am-3pm
Dates: 7/10/2023-7/14/2023
In experimental bookmaking, we will explore what makes a book a book, what makes a story a story, and we’ll have fun pushing the boundaries of form and content. Campers will write and illustrate a short story as well as bind a book where their story will live. This camp will be centered around one main project--making a book, whatever that may mean!--with smaller activities, games, and explorations to accompany it.

All children start out as abstract artists, they play in color and shape and feeling, they explore without worrying about the final result. In this one week camp we will embolden your little artist to paint and color and build and sketch without an end result in mind, to simply put their energy and emotion out into the world in physical form. We will work with an assortment of materials in this camp and make our art pieces in 2D and 3D.

Stories animate, they excite, they fuel the imagination and send it soaring. In this one week summer camp we will use books as the creative jumping off point for our artistic adventures. We will begin the day on a cozy carpet reading a story from which we will take our inspiration and apply it to the days' artistic endeavours. We will make puppets inspired by Where the Wild Things are, explore color through The Day the Crayons Quit and learn there are no mistakes in art with Beautiful Oops. This camp will foster your child’s love of literature and give them the tools to create their unique stories.

Join us for a week of working BIG! We'll draw on big paper on the walls, make murals, mega-mobiles, super-sized sculptures and more! We'll look at the work of artists like Keith Haring and Chiharu Shiota for inspiration as we create installations in our studio space. Don't worry parents, we know you live in city-sized spaces! Most of this art will be collaborative and created just for the joy of the process, and only manageable pieces will be brought home ;)

Ages: Rising 6th-9th Graders
Class Time: 12:30pm-5pm

We will use observation and imagination to map the city we live in and the nature it contains. We will visit The Brooklyn Botanic Gardens, getting to know some local flora, and making our own field guides to the neighborhood. What can we learn about the nature around us through observation, and what worlds can we build through mapping our imagined landscapes? Join us to find out. We will use drawing, painting and printmaking to explore our surroundings.
